How to Make an Angel Tree Topper - Dollar Store Decorating

This week I'm joining in with some other DIY Bloggers for a week's worth of Holiday themed Dollar Store Decorating posts. How fun! I created this lovely Angel Star Tree Topper.

Here's what I started with. I don't have one of those Dollar Stores that sells everything for a dollar in my town, my dollar store has a range of prices, so I had to splurge and spend $3. Haha! Anyway, it's a cardboard star with silver glitter, but the glitter was a bit cheap looking so it needed a makeover. Glass glitter always adds a richer, more old world appearance to ornaments, so I knew that's just what this little tree topper needed!

Supply List:

1) Dollar Store Star Tree Topper
2)White Cardstock
3)School Glue Gel
4)German Glass Glitter (or quality glitter of your choice)
5)Silver Tinsel Trim
6)Hot Glue Gun

I began by applying a coat of School Glue Gel. This is the best stuff that I have found to use with Glass Glitter, it really grabs hold of the glitter and there is much less shedding then with some of the other glues that I've tried.

After applying the glue, sprinkle on the glitter and let dry. I usually do one side at a time and let it dry fully in between.

Next print out the graphic, onto plain white card stock, and cut it out, trimming around the edges as closely as possible.

 I wanted to add a little extra dimension and texture, so I hot glued on some tinsel garland. (I don't have a source for this, since I actually pulled it out of the trash heap at Lucketts one year! Hopefully your craft store will have something similar.)

 Just follow along the edges, hot glueing as you go, and then trim off any excess on the ends.

Next apply some hot glue to the center of the card stock and stick it onto the front of your Star.

And there you go! So much cuter right?

Here she is on my tree. I love how Vintage this looks, like an heirloom that's been passed down through the years. The glass glitter will tarnish over the next few months, and when I pull her back out next Christmas it will have such a fabulous patina!
