DIY Vintage Inspired Bunting

IMG_7263 TGIF, eh? That means it’s time for another DIY project – yay! This week I’m sharing how to make a vintage inspired bunting using bottle images – although you can use any images, this collection of 5 bottles were just meant to be together. They’re actually two different sets of images found over on The Graphics Fairy – Bottle Set 1 & Bottle Set 2

IMG_7250 I started by printing out the images onto fabric, just like for the printed pillow. Make sure you have space around them to cut out your triangles. See those little triangles? There’s two of them, one for the printed fabric, and one for a burlap backer. I used them as a pattern to make them all even.

IMG_7248 For the patterns, I cut a 5 inch square and a 6 inch square, then on each one I found the mid point on one side, used a ruler to make a line from the opposite side corner to the middle mark – from each opposite corner. Then I used a rotary cutter and guide ruler to make a clean even cut.

IMG_7252 I used the 5 inch triangle, placed it over the printed image and traced around it with a fabric pen. With my rotary cutter, I trimmed just inside the line all the way around.

IMG_7253 The 6 inch triangle was my pattern for cutting out the burlap, you can do it with scissors or a rotary cutter – either one works.

IMG_7254 Next I stitched around the edge of the burlap triangles with a matching thread to lock them to prevent unraveling.

IMG_7255 Using white thread on top and tan thread as a bobbin, I stitched the printed triangles right on top.

IMG_7260 Zig zag stitches over simple jute twine brings it all together. I spaced my triangles about 1 1/2 inches apart – so that the entire bunting was right at 4 ft. long.

IMG_7273 All that’s left to do is hang it up! I love the frayed edges and pretty bottles together. But you could also do it with words, crowns, birds, the sky is definitely the limit!

See ya next week with another DIY project – in the mean time I hope you’ll stop by over at The Shabby Creek Cottage & say hello :)

  4. Wonderful project. I'm trying to get caught up on my emails, I am so far behind. Think I have the bottles saved but just in case I can't find them I'm gonna print 'em out again. Saves me time. I haven't made a banner for while so this will get me going on them again. The burlap with printed bottles is great. Thanks so much Karen and Gina
